Why is the divorce rate rising?

The divorce rate is at an all-time high, as you likely know if you read the news. Half of all marriages in this country end in divorce. Everyone seems to have their own ideas as to why the divorce rate is rising. More couples live together before marriage. The popular media does not portray marriage as a serious institution any more. Some blame the rising divorce rate on feminism or on young people's inability o stay committed. Some blame the high divorce rate on money problems many people face or on rising rates of alcohol and drug abuse. Divorces are easier to get than ever and some people think this contributes to a high divorce rate.

Whatever the reasons, it is true that the divorce rate today is much higher than it was even twenty years ago. A divorce rate that is rising affects many areas of society. Divorce lawyers multiply and charge more for their services. A high divorce rate clogs courts with divorce cases. More people seek counseling or experience bankruptcy due to divorce rates that climb. A high divorce rate also affects children, as more and more children come from broken homes or have to witness the breakup of a marriage. A high divorce rate also means that more and more children are being raised in homes with step parents. There is no doubt about it; whatever its causes, a high divorce rate makes life more complex.

But is a high divorce rate all bad? While many people talk about the causes of a high divorce rate with accusatory tones, there are plenty of reasons to be happy with a higher divorce rate. A high divorce rate means that people are no longer staying with one partner if that partner proves abusive or irresponsible. With a more flexible definition of partnerships and commitment, people no longer feel that they have to only remain with one person all their lives, especially if that person is a danger. People feel more liberated to pursue lives in their own ways, withou8t worrying what other people think. A high divorce rate could also mean that fewer children have to witness long-term abuse since a spouse can easily leave a partner with no social stigma today. No matter what the causes, a high divorce rate is not necessarily all bad.
